Momori Meets Valeriaux Marquaile
Momori stood on the wooden deck - just one of many of the structures built amongst the trees by the Rosehouse. It felt odd, being stationed in Ishgard for the foreseeable future. She had only been to the land in passing, prior. Momori leaned against one of the railings and gazed at the blustery landscape below.
Valeriaux had recently returned to the Voyage's campsite after having been away on business in Gridania for several suns. Though the news of recent events had not brought him *terribly* much surprise, the news that there was a new member of the Research Team did pique his interest. So he began to inquire in regards to their whereabouts. It took him a bit of asking before he'd attained a solid direction of a Rose Knight having recented sighted the lalafell. So the elezen made his way up to the watch platforms with a curious gaze. Then his eyes settled upon the lalafellin individual leaning against the side rail he knew he'd found who he was looking to find. He slipped an amiable smile onto his lips as he approached. "Pray forgive me but am I interrupting aught?" The elezen's smile was a deep contrast to his generously scarred face.
Momori didn’t turn right away, but her head shifted slightly in acknowledgement to the stranger’s greeting. “No, I’m not busy at the moment. Of whom do I have the pleasure?” She turned to see a pair of boots, and looked up. A familiar face, but one that she had yet to connect a name to. “Ah, a fellow member of the expedition, I presume?”
Valeriaux placed a hand upon his chest as he bowed forward, still wearing the amiable smile. "I am indeed. I am Valeriaux Marquaile of Gridania." He returns upright. "I am a member of the Research Team under Master West. I am told that thou are also a member."
Momori: “Valeriaux, of Gridania.” She repeated the words to herself, committing them into memory. “I’m Momori. From...Ul’dah.” The last two words, she said with some difficulty, and a slight sour look crossed over her face. But as quickly as it was there, it was gone, and she was back to giving the elezen a practiced smile. “Why yes, I’m a new member, though I haven’t done much research yet. Mostly setting up, and whatnot.”
Valeriaux: "It is a pleasure to make thy acquaintance, Lady Mori." He dips his head forward politely before gesturing toward the railing. "May I join thee in thy observations?" He asked with a slight tilt of his head. "And thou can be certain that the research will come. The rest of the crew has a knack for finding...objects most curious."
Momori shrugged, and stepped to the right, making room for him to look over the railing as well. Though she was really looking between the bars. “Hm, well that’s a good thing I assume?”
Valeriaux smiled gratefully before making his way over to join the woman at the railing. He lifts his hands and rests them upon the railing as he gazes out over the Sea of Clouds. "I do suspect so, yes. It is both to further knowledge regarding that which we attain and to safeguard such artifacts from the hands of those with baleful intent."
Momori - A thoughtful look spreads on her face. “Where does the research team stash such artifacts, notes, and the like? I would enjoy combing through everything in my free time. Could say that was one reason I joined up with the crew. No better place to talk to like-minded folk.”
Valeriaux bobbed his head to the side, a hand rising up to rub his chin thoughtfully. "Hmm. The records are largely kept within the Command Room or Master West's office. Whilst I do not believe we are possessed of free access, if there is aught that thou wishes to know I can certainly proffer mine best or we could seek out Master West." He offers, a kind smile snapping into place upon his lips. "Thou has certainly found many with a heart for adventure."
Momori shelved the words in the back of her mind later. Someone named ‘West.’ The command room. Places and people that she would have great interest in later...but for now, she snapped her attention back the elezen at her side. “What sort of adventures have you gone on? Since you’ve been here longer than I.” Momori took one of her daggers and absentmindedly traced its edge from hilt to tip with a gloved hand.
Valeriaux glances down in the direction of the woman as she draws one of her daggers, eyeing it thoughtfully before bobbing his head to the side. "Being of the research team -- and not possessing martial prowess of mine own -- I fear that mine own taste for adventure is oft in the wake of those more intrepid than I." He emits quiet chuckle before shaking his head. "Though there are times in which the expertise of a scholar is a boon to have when afield. So I have found mineself on the occasional venture. One of which brought us unto a manor tainted by the presence of the Void."
Momori tosses the blade up and catches it deftly with one hand, a motion well practiced. “The void, eh? Shadowy buggers, and not easily trifled with. Hopefully everyone came out with their marbles intact?”
Valeriaux dips his head toward Momori gravely at the observation. "Indeed. A veritable taint upon the Star." He seemed to be -rather- firm on that point. Though he proceeds with a gentle smile. "All stepped away without severe injury. Fortunate favored us and revealed the lurking shadow to be of only mild potency. Whilst still a keen threat, it was dispatched and the artifact recovered."
Momori nodded. Though she had yet to really work alongside her fellow members, it was good to hear of their past achievements. Less burdens on her part. “That’s good. Hopefully we won’t have to deal with voidsent in the future, but I already know that such thoughts are wishful thinking.” She chuckles lightly. “So, you claim you’re from Gridania. Can’t say I’ve seen too many of your kind while I was last in that city.”
Valeriaux lifts his brow slightly, not having expected the woman's rather both observation. That it was was wrong, of course, but more so that many often went to great lengths to avoid the topic. "Those of Gelmorran heritage are not as prolific within the city walls as our Wildwood cousins." He clicks his tongue upon the roof of his mouth before shaking his head. "Even mine own fortune comes from the decision of mine step-father -- a wildwood man of some measure of prestige and wealth -- to take mine mother and I into his arms."
Momori stares at Valeriaux, her gaze cold and penetrating. But her words are opposite to her overall demeanor. “Sorry, it appears it’s a sensitive subject for you. I appreciate that you’re willing to speak plainly to me.” She crosses her arms and leans back slightly, thinking of Ul’dah.
Valeriaux: "Thou owes no apologies, Lady Mori." He shakes his head slowly. "'Tis a facet of mine life that I have come to accept. In truth I have fared much better than most. Though, for a time, I lived a life of meager means as a young boy I was soon given a life that lacked want." He offers the woman a small smile before looking back out toward the clouds. "And for that I am possessed of great gratitude and a desire to see that same kindness given unto others in need." He quiets for a moment.
Valeriaux: "Does thou think fondly of thy home?"
Momori: “Ul’dah? That pissant collection of the corrupt, rich, and uncaring? No, I have no love of the place.” She smiles at Valeriaux despite the words that come from her mouth. “Like you, I have someone to thank for lifting me from a life on the streets. And I have fully committed my mind to improving the situation for the have-nots, no matter the cost. It is why I look to the civilizations of eld. To discover what secrets they hide, and improve life for the people today.”
Valeriaux lifts his brow high at that answer, his head tilting to the side before a slow smile returns to his lips. "It would seem that thou and I are possessed of very same goals, Lady Mori." He replies with a touch of admiration in his voice. "It is mine goal to provide succor and relief to those that require it most. It pleasing to hear of kindred souls seeking the same."
Momori nods, happy to find a kindred spirit. Her gaze returns to over the sea of clouds, lingering on strange flowers that floated in mid-air. “Would that I was able to say that my goals, right now, are so noble. Truth to be told, I’m here to get justice. Though, hopefully after everythings said and done, I can return to work of a less...bloody nature.” She glances over to Valeriaux, scanning for any reaction.
Valeriaux lifts his brow high at the rather open way that Momori shares her rather dark motives. His head tilts to the side slightly before giving a slow nod of understanding. "Justice is of great import as well." He pauses a moment, considering the woman. "If I may be so bold as to ask, Lady Mori, against who do you seek justice?"
Momori: “Don’t worry, it’s someone in the White Rovers. A common enemy, so no problems there, right?” She gives him a sweet smile, one that hides just the faintest hint of something sinister. “I don’t like it when people steal what doesn't belong to them...wouldn't you agree?”
Valeriaux holds Momori's gaze for a prolonged and quiet moment. He seemed to be considering her words quietly before choosing to respond. His consideration ended with a slow exhale and a bob of his head. "It is, no doubt, uncouth behavior, Lady Mori."
Valeriaux: "And if it is amongst the White Devil Rovers there is no doubt that thou shall have thy chance to make matters right."
Momori nods. “Glad to hear it. But, it’s not a very pleasant topic to speak of now, is it? Hmm, what nothings do others usually enjoy chatting about. The weather, or favorite foods?” She chuckles lightly, not able to pick up on Valeriaux’s slight discomfort. “The weather is certainly very active in this region. No wonder there aren’t many lalafell around - one strong breeze would be enough to send us soaring in the air.”
Valeriaux chuckles quietly, tipping his head in gentle concession. "They speak of a great many topics, though I shan't compel thee to speak of matters that thou does not possess interest." He pauses a moment, a wry smile touching his lips at her amusing observation. "The inclement weather and frigid temperatures both do much to keep many away from these isles."
Momori: “I will have to travel with rocks in my pockets, lest I take flight, an unwilling kite.” Her expression is, as usual, completely serious, but she raises her hands and forms the shape of a diamond. Perhaps a joke of some sort?!
Valeriaux glances down at Momori in shock at first, though the expression readily gives way to amusement. A gentle and lilting laugh escaping the man as he shakes his head. "Thou might speak with Master Lune. He is an expert on the creation and flying of kites. Mayhap there is merit in this for scouting purposes?"
Momori: “Lune. Yes, I met him. Yesterday, he spoke of getting hit in the eyes by a self propelled frisbee. An interesting character, to be sure.” She closed her eyes, giving the idea of a danger kite serious thought. “Hah, perhaps! I would have to trust whoever’s on the other side of the line, however. Should they let go, I would have to  kiss my ground-based existence goodbye, and be forced to live in the clouds henceforth!”
Valeriaux shakes his head slowly, a soft chuckle escaping the man. "Most certainly should it occur in an environ such as these." At the mention of Lune, however, he offers a gentle smile. It seems the fact that the young miqo'te had been hit by some contraption didn't come as much of a surprise. "Master Lune is an ... excitable young man but possessed with a gift of invention unlike many I have seen. I foresee a bright future in him."
Momori: “You know, the man raved at length about moogles. And magnets. He’s quite mad,” she states matter-of-factly. A mischievous look shows in her eyes. “We all are, to some degree. I mean, bloody hells, yesterday someone ate a screwdriver. Nonetheless, it’ll be fun to discover your eccentricities, Valeriaux. Underneath that pish-posh, gentlemanly cover...”
Valeriaux lifts his brow slightly at -that-, eyeing the woman quietly. There's a flicker behind his violet gaze as though he's taking measure of something. Though it's quite to pass and an amiable smile finds its way upon his lips. "Thou will most like find that it is only mildly less boring than the rest of mine personage, Lady Mori. I assure thee."
Momori chuckles lightly. “Hah, spoken like someone with something worth hiding. Don’t worry, I won’t push, but perhaps over a couple glasses of ale or during a long night of working…” She gives him an innocent grin and slightly tilts her head to the side. Her motions almost appear choreographed.
Valeriaux shakes his head quietly, an amused air remaining about the man as lifts his gaze to look out over the landscape of the isles once more. "I shan't dissuade thee from thy quest, of course, Lady Mori." He emits a quiet chuckle. "I can but warn thee of the pending disappointment in what thou are to find."

tagged by: @lxscivus ( thank you kindly, i enjoyed reading your rendition. ) tagging: whoever finds their character as intriguing as i do.
instructions: fill out the questions about your muse, repost, and tag as many people you want. note: under a read more because i spent too much time detailing this out.
1. what does your muse smell like?
honestly depends on the day’s activities. while he manages his upkeep at given intervals, there are days few and far between where he longingly desires a bath to fend off the acrid scent of sweat that surfaces from a day of traveling, especially if they’ve been running in mire and muck, or the unfortunate aftermath of dealing with beasts in the field or daemons at night.
he’s not sensitive to it, but simply finds it undesirable. is a bath always available to him? no, but there are ways to maintain without running water ( he’s rather spoiled to it, though ) -- given his position as a representative of the crown, he’s very conscious of his hygiene, and takes pride in keeping up with appearances, including his scent.
on a normal day, he carries the pleasant scent of cologne with a touch of fresh leather ( notably around his neck, or the collar of his shirt, then at the hollows of his wrists or the cuffs of his sleeves. ) -- none of which is overbearing. while traveling eos, the scent is unique, and remarkably reminiscent of insomnia. clean shaven, freshly kept, pressed and presentable -- on occasion, he’ll carry faint traces of spice used in his culinary endeavors, or lingering smoke from elemancy or the camp fire.
2. how often does your muse bathe/shower? any habits?
as often as the opportunity presents itself. bathing is a luxury, while showers are more convenient when looking to expedite his cleanliness. even in states of undress, he’s careful to not leave clothes lying on the floor, namely when it comes to his crownsguard fatigues. they were tailored specifically for him, and as such, they deserve respect. there’s always a fresh change ready to go for when other attire is in the wash.
first of all, it’s one thing to expect clean lodging and fresh bedding, but it’s another entirely to expect staff to completely disinfect the rooms or caravans from top to bottom. there’s no telling what all has been in there, and he simply accommodates rather than chase the possibilities.
hot water is his preference, but not as hot as he can stand it, and he’ll settle for lukewarm if that’s what it takes. he’s careful to clean anything out from beneath his finger nails, makes extensive use of hotel / motel soap that’s provided to exfoliate the daily grime and gives certain attention to cleaning his face ( followed by a generous handful of cold water following suit his bath or shower. ) he uses lotion on his hands to keep them soft or at any place where his skin feels particularly dry. it’s also important to note that ignis is thorough when it comes to washing his hair. he really massages the scalp all the way to the nape of his neck to rid himself of any unfavorable mess that might be clinging.
the fine feathery appeal takes work to achieve.
3. does your muse have any tattoos or piercing?
no tattoos, and no piercings. there’s no image, quote, saying or insignia that he desires to have permanent residence on his body and piercings just haven’t really appealed to him. should he entertain the thought further, piercing his ears with basic studs would probably be fine, but completely unnecessary in the grand scheme of things.
again, given no rhyme or reason, he’d rather just opt out.
4. any body movement quirks ( ex.knee shakes )?
he has a few habits in movement, such as devoted care to his spectacles or the tap of his foot while waiting in casual stance. when surrounded by civilization, he’s more prone to standing still or with a hand on the jut of his hip, or with crossed arms. he can also be found with a contemplative hand holding his chin, especially while observing what any shops have to offer.
while in the field, there’s always some degree of fluid motion that allows him to keep pace or maintain the practice of movement. he’ll take to adjusting his gloves, keeping them firmly fitted or curling his fingers in adjustment of the leather. he’s fit enough to be devoid of soreness at the end of the day, but the act of moving keeps him limber and should over exertion be an issue, then it staves off whatever soreness might settle before they’re ready to bed down for the night.
that being said, he always carries himself with quiet confidence.
5. what do they sleep in?
when they’re not out at camp ‘roughing’ it, just a clean shirt and pants will make due. otherwise, he’s likely to just divest of his coat and various accessories to make sleeping more of a comfort. his glasses are always neatly folded to the side, either way.
however, there’s the importance of being ready at a moment’s notice. he is one of the details to their retinue of the heir apparent, which is no small undertaking. after the fall of insomnia, they live as fugitives to the empire, a story as told by the empire filled with “alternative facts”. he pays rapt attention to the broadcasts and statements issued by the authorities.
they’re safe from daemons at their havens, certainly, but that speaks little to niflheim’s magitek infantry. mostly, they manage to remain evasive to the empire, which allows them certain freedoms ( more so than earnestly realized, but not to be taken for granted ) -- it’s just more comforting to take safe precautions as opposed to being sorry for oversights later.
6. what’s their favorite piece of clothing?
as far as clothing goes, his leather jacket ( to choose only one ) but as a whole, his crownsguard fatigues. they serve as a symbol of his status, as well as his loyalty, both of which he adorns with pride. they represent his home and hearth.
as far as accessories go, his glasses, without a shadow of a doubt. a second favorite would be attributed to the skull pendant that sits abreast his collar bone.
7. what do they do when they wake up?
he’ll be the first to rouse, and always in the moments before his alarm is set to sound. his internal clock is more reliable and old habits are hard to break. when he sleeps, it’s relatively sound, so there’s not much disentangling to be done. his first order of business is unfolding the frame of his spectacles to greet the morning with clarity.
where he goes from there is dependent on their sleeping arrangements. should he be near the zip fold of the tent, he’ll leave behind his phone ( alarm still set ) in order to stretch out his frame and see about getting some coffee while taking breakfast into consideration. otherwise, if he’s near the back of the tent, he’s not above taking advantage of his leisure until the alarm goes off ( taking a moment to see if any local news is accessible via his phone ) -- but he still won’t be found without his glasses.
perhaps when hell freezes over, or chocobos take dominion. they seem to enjoy shiny trinkets, much to his chagrin.
should they be staying in town or at a caravan, he’ll venture out to either the station for the morning papers, the diner to have a friendly chat with the tipster for any new information, or to scope out the local fare while remaining within safe parameters of the others.
8. how do they sleep? position?
when they stay at the motel / hotel, it’s more cost efficient to share a bed with any of his comrades, and he’s not really particular to which one it is. noctis, of course, gets first choice on where he’d like to sleep, and while ignis has preferences, he just falls in line with convenience as opposed to making a fuss ( if you’re not part of the solution, then you’re part of the problem. he’s a problem solver. ) regardless of whoever his bed mate might be, he stays in position without much movement, keeping to his part. he might sleep on his side with an arm folded underneath his head and his other hand tucked in the bend of his arm, or he’ll sleep on his back with a lifted knee. rarely does he ever sleep on his front. he also prefers to sleep on the outside perimeter when utilizing the tent, as opposed to being stuck in the middle.
note: after becoming blind, his sleeping position is a touch more defensive. he might sleep with an arm or hand gently draped over his eyes, and there’s always the phantom expectation of being able to see when he wakes, especially in the first few months. he has to be careful to not rub at his eyes, especially when there’s pain that flashes through in lieu of the wound itself.
9. what do their hands feel like?
his hands aren’t as soft as say, a woman’s hands, but they’re not gruff or callous as the hands of a working man might reflect. there’s a firmness to his flesh that’s come about in training, but he wears gloves to stave off any callous or blisters that might come about in the process, especially when it comes to use of his pole arms. his gloves aren’t meant just for the protection of his hands, but they’re meant to improve his grip and maintain control of his weapons without inevitable sweat impeding his grasp or throwing off his trajectory.
his nails are always trim and there’s a firm confidence in his grasp or his touch. hands are strong conveyors of his confidence, even when departing knowledge to his comrades or his charge. they are as strong as they are gentle, and his hand grasping a shoulder is as significant as any embrace.
10. if you kissed them, what would they usually taste like?
fresh, and invigorating -- specific flavor will always vary. there may be a distinct taste of the morning’s coffee or ebony on his breath, or the preferred mint / cinnamon flavor that’s residual from brushing his teeth and tongue, or the flavor of an after dinner mint.
then there’s the distinct taste that’s all his own, as layered, rich and complex as any of his culinary achievements, that which is iconic to only himself.
he’s far more concerned about the state of his breath as opposed to preparation for kissing, or being kissed, so he’s conscious about not letting whatever aftertaste of their meal linger.

Lindblad Places Order For Design & Construction Of Two New Expedition Cruise Vessels
“I’m not a great lover of freezing cold weather”, says Sven Lindblad, the president and CEO of Lindblad Expeditions, and an expert in polar travels. Then he adds: “Unless it’s beautiful – then I love it!”
That’s what’s so special about Sven Lindblad and Lindblad Expeditions, Sven will only take you to the most beautiful places. He’s no fan of sending travellers to the North Pole – just for having it ticked off the bucket list.
“Above a certain latitude, it’s boring, there is nothing there anymore. I’m not interested in bringing people there”.
Reference: ulstein.com
Africa shaped Sven’s future
Sven is Swiss-born, raised in the U.S. but with Swedish origins.
“Many summer holidays were spent in Sweden, and he lived there for a couple of years aged 14 to 16 and attended Swedish schools. Travelling has always been a part of his life. Sven’s father started up a travel company back in 1958 and was the first to send a tourist expedition to Antarctica in 1966. Sven has also travelled on numerous of his father’s expeditions. Aged 18, Sven got into bad trouble, after having written a very angry, political term paper at college in Washington.
“My father wanted me to get out of the country! He arranged a summer job for me in Uganda and later organised a job offer in Kenya. I spent 7 years in Africa, and those years developed my values. I met wonderful people there and experienced the wild, the huge grass plains, and endless spaces. It gave me a great sense of freedom, and it was a magnificent education.
“One day my father visited my camp and asked if I would come home to work for him. I didn’t want to leave Africa, and I certainly didn’t want to work in the travel business, but my father was – and is – one of my heroes, so I went home. But I was restless. After a couple of years in his company, I decided to set up my own. Naturally, I started with Africa expeditions, going to the places I knew so well.”
Polar marine expeditions
Sven’s expeditions are marine based, he uses small ships to explore deeper and farther into the untouched. Today, he specialises in the polar areas. That’s a long way from the safaris in warm Kenya.
“My involvement in ships is rooted in my time in Africa. The vast oceans give me the same great sense of freedom as the huge plains did. The way I run ships is the same way as I used to run safaris. Both are driven by the same desire, to discover, learn and understand. On a vessel, you are not bound by physical structures, and we go to different places, adapting the travels to seasonal changes.”
First polar newbuild
Lindblad Expeditions has ordered their first polar newbuilds at Ulstein Verft in Norway. The first, ‘National Geographic Endurance’ is named after Ernest Shackleton’s ship, ‘Endurance’. Shackleton is another of Sven’s heroes. In 1916, after Shackleton and his crew had been trapped in the Antarctic pack ice for more than a year, Shackleton took five of his strongest crew members to seek help. After 16 days crossing the ocean in a small boat, Shackleton and two of his men marched 51 kilometres to a whaling station and found help. All crew members were rescued.
Smaller is better
The new ‘Endurance’ offers much space for passengers. The vessel measures 124.4 metres and has accommodation for only 126 guests.
“On a per-cabin basis this is probably the most expensive passenger ship ever built”, says Sven with a big laugh.
“You get an economy of scale with larger vessels, but our company has a unique perspective. We’ve come to the conclusion that smaller is definitely better.”
The ‘Endurance’ is optimized for low impact on nature and for the right number of people to give them the expedition of their lives.
“With more guests, you will compromise the experience,” states Sven.
National Geographic alliance
Lindblad has for years been teamed up with National Geographic. “When I grew up, our source of information to the distant parts of the world were the National Geographic magazines,” says Sven. Their scientific approach and their great photographs have always appealed to him. “It is completely clear that climate change is the biggest problem man has ever created. The only way to get out of this mess, which our children and grandchildren will have to face, is to acknowledge the issue and put it to the forefront of our concerns. By taking people to the polar regions, they see icebergs taller than buildings, they meet scientists and specialists, and they develop an emotional connection to the issue. A lot of influential people travel on these ships, and I’ve seen consequences in various ways.” One of the results is the fund set up by National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions, to which previous passengers have donated $15 million to improve the health and viability of the world’s oceans.
Eco travels
Through his travels, Sven has seen how nature is impacted by marine pollution, and he is very active in protecting large marine areas. Throughout the Lindblad fleet, all single-use plastic has been eliminated a long time ago, including plastic bottles, and they are now working together with their supply chain to eliminate plastic in packaging.
Another means to reduce the environmental impact of the ‘Endurance’, is the waste heat recovery system. Propulsion and machinery solutions are also carefully planned.
The diesel-electric solution is “among the most environmentally friendly diesel engines that exist”, according to Lindblad Expeditions’ Senior Vice President – New Building, Nikos Doulis.
In order to avoid disturbing the wildlife, the propulsion system is further equipped with Silent E notation to reduce noise to a minimum.
The X-BOW® design solution
Then comes the X-BOW®, a patented design solution which combines speed with comfort.
“We were intrigued with the technology of the X-BOW®. That was our primary consideration.”
Sven Lindblad, CEO and president Lindblad Expeditions “The X-BOW® hull was originally created for offshore supply vessels in the North Sea with the goal of maintaining speed and comfort in some of the world’ s wildest seas,” as Lindblad Expeditions’ captain, Leif Skog, explains it. A smoother ride leads to reduced fuel consumption. Also, the unobstructed view enables optimal wildlife observation. The design enables forward and straight down the sides viewing.
Contracted for design and construction
“One of our engineers uncovered the X-BOW® solution at some conference, came back and talked about it, and urged us to consider this solution,” says Sven. Lindblad representatives met up with an Ulstein team, and not long after, the ship construction contract was signed with Ulstein. Ulstein is not only constructing the vessel but is also a ship designer and the inventor of the X-BOW®.
“Were intrigued by the technology of the X-BOW®”
“We are always looking for new places to go, and with this vessel, Ulstein allows us to go to places we have not been able to go before. At delivery, this vessel will have the highest ice class (PC5, Category A) of any purpose-built passenger vessel. This allows us to spend more time in polar regions. One of our planned itineraries will be a 33-day Antarctica voyage from Ushuaia in South America to New Zealand, which we can do due to this vessel’s ice-displacing capacity. “
”There is a strong and deep shipbuilding tradition in Norway, but I certainly didn’t choose Ulstein because of their construction price,” says Sven, again laughing.
“We were intrigued with the technology of the X-BOW®. That was our primary consideration.”
“We looked at many different yards, with a perspective on technology and pricing. We found that people at Ulstein are straightforward. These are people we could trust. They handle complexity and are flexible, which is valuable to us, who are building polar ships for the first time. Combining all the things that we care about, Ulstein was the best choice. I have a comfort level about building a vessel like this in a place like that. It allows us all to sleep well at night.”

You’ve already heard the adage “breast is best.” Breastfeeding has been shown to be immunologically, emotionally and nutritionally advantageous.
But did you know there’s another rarely reported benefit of breastfeeding? Dental health.
The primal ways of providing for our children to ensure that they develop to their full genetic potential have, in many cases, long been forgotten. Breastfeeding being a good example.
Breastfed babies have a better chance of oral health thanks to breastfeeding’s effects on the development of the oral cavity and airway. Children with a properly developed, wide dental arch are more commonly breastfed, and may have fewer problems with snoring and sleep apnea later in life.
With fewer malocclusions (technical term for crooked teeth) children who were breastfed may have a reduced need for orthodontics as well. Breastfeeding also helps the lower face and airway develop correctly minimizing the chance that your child will have sleep issues.
However, many think breastfeeding will come naturally, and that’s simply not the case, according to breastfeeding experts. When discussing the importance of breastfeeding to oral health with my patients and my readers, I continually hear the following laments:
“If breastfeeding is natural, why is it so freakin’ hard?”
“I just don’t produce enough milk.”
“Breastfeeding is just too hard on my body—I’m giving up.”
That’s why I’m thrilled to invite board certified lactation consultant, Farrell Topham, IBCLC from Breastfeeding SF to the blog today to share her secrets for breastfeeding success. Farrell is one of the best in the field, and her article should help make breastfeeding less frustrating, less mysterious, and most of all, a pain-free success!
Dr. Mark Burhenne
Many moms desire to breastfeed because it is the “natural” thing to do. Dreamy pictures of mothers nursing in frilly nightgowns can be found in almost every OB/Midwife office, giving the impression that breastfeeding is a perfect and magical activity.
While nursing can be a tremendously beautiful human experience that forms a deep bond between parent and child, this ideal connection doesn’t often happen immediately after birth because breastfeeding is a learned skill.
Hearing that breastfeeding is “natural” is a bit misleading. It is the biologically normal way for mammal mothers to feed their young, but it rarely comes naturally to moms because each mother-baby pair has to learn how to do it and figure out how their puzzle pieces fit together.
Just like any other learned skill–like riding a bike or walking a tightrope–breastfeeding involves stumbling at first, perfecting with practice and absolutely requires coaching and support. Once you understand this reality and set up accurate expectations, it is time to get prepared!
Learning how breastfeeding works through prenatal education and preparation greatly increases the chance of meeting your breastfeeding goals and generally makes the postpartum experience more relaxed and joyful.
My 5 Best Tips for Breastfeeding Success:
1. Build a Strong Milk Supply
As a lactation consultant one of the most common phrases I hear is “I’m worried I don’t have enough milk!” The most important thing one can do to avoid concerns about supply is to ensure you lay a really strong foundation early on.
Here’s what most people don’t realize: The first few days postpartum are your body’s calibration period. Your breasts want to know how much milk to make and it is essential that you and your baby reply with a resounding “lots and lots please!” So how can you tell your body to build a strong supply in the calibration stage?
Frequent Breastfeeding
Lots and lots of breastfeeding is a fabulous way to not only lay the foundation for copious milk supply but to perfect the art of fitting together with your baby. Aim for at least 10 times in 24 hrs, the more the better!
Skin to Skin
When you keep your baby on your body (their natural habitat after all) you allow them the best opportunity to help you establish supply. When placed skin to skin, a newborn’s primal breastfeeding reflexes switch on – rooting, bobbing, wiggling and seeking towards the breast. Allowing baby lots of time to exercise these reflexes at breast increases the strength of milk supply and the speed at which your baby learns to breastfeed.
Breast Massage & Hand Expression
Gentle – keyword gentle– breast massage and hand expression are very effective for stimulating the breast and establishing supply. Make up your own technique or watch this excellent video.
It is important for every mother and baby to establish supply in the early days, and it is especially crucial to do so if the mom has any medical risk factors for low milk supply such as infertility, diabetes, PCOS, thyroid issues, major breast surgeries, preterm birth, or history of low milk supply with a previous baby. If you have a risk factor for low milk supply, I recommend reaching out to an IBCLC Lactation Consultant before or as soon as possible after birth to ensure supply is well established.
2. No, Nipple Pain Is NOT Normal!
Perhaps the biggest breastfeeding myth of all time is “breastfeeding just hurts!” Any lactation consultant will tell you that this is incredibly false. Breastfeeding should not be painful. It should feel like a gentle tugging or massaging sensation, it should NOT make your toes curl.
Because breastfeeding and specifically latching are learned skills, it is somewhat common to have some discomfort with latching in the very, very beginning when mom and baby are quite literally learning how to fit together, but comfort should rapidly improve with the normal repetition and learning experience. If you can’t get your latching to be more comfortable by day three postpartum, call for help!
Pain is an acute problem and should be addressed by seeking help from an expert.
Search here to find an IBCLC lactation consultant in your town.
After you’ve called for help, prevent damage such as scabs and cracks on your nipples by keeping them moist with a nipple cream and covered with a breast pad at all times! My favorite natural preparations are:
  MotherLove Organic Nipple Cream
Bamboobies Disposable Nursing Pads
3. Equipment is Key
One of the things I love about breastfeeding is how low-tech and simple it can be. You don’t need a lot of paraphernalia to breastfeed. However, in the early days when you are deep in the learning curve, it can be helpful to have a few choice tools. Aside from a good natural nipple cream and soft nursing pads, here are a few of my must-haves:
  My Brest Friend Nursing Pillow
Having excellent positioning with your body is the first step towards a comfortable latch. A firm breastfeeding pillow like this one provides good grounding for mom and baby and prevents gravity from pulling baby away from the breast which in turn prevents nipple pain.
Did you know gravity is the most underrated breastfeeding equipment there is? Google search “laidback breastfeeding” or watch this video on laid back breastfeeding.
4. Get Excited About Baby Poop
Before you really learn your baby’s cues and habits, many moms wonder if their baby is getting enough milk from breastfeeding. After all, there aren’t any ounce markers on our breasts!
Checking baby’s weight every few weeks at the pediatrician is a quick and easy way of knowing that baby is nursing well enough to grow. It’s also a great idea to find out if there is a drop-in weigh station anywhere in your town where baby can be weighed such as a baby boutique or parent education center.
Outside of weight gain, parents can feel confident that their baby is feeding well by paying close attention to baby’s diaper output. Making lots of wet and dirty diapers indicates good hydration and nourishment.
By day six of life, newborns should have at least six wet and at least three dirty diapers per 24 hours. The more the better!
A simple tally sheet or app such as Glow can help you to keep track of baby’s ins and outs. For techier parents who want to go hands free, check out the app Google Assistant, available on both Android and iPhone, which will log a recording when you say “Hey Google, add poop and pee.” There’s even an Alexa skill for those of you with an Alexa in your home!
5. Line Up Help In Advance
Breastfeeding and parenting are challenging. Every single mother needs support and coaching, it just cannot be done alone. It is important to line these things up ahead of time to expedite the process of getting help and support when needed.
Before your baby is born, make a list of your breastfeeding cheerleaders within your friend and family circle. Who can you turn to who will understand your concerns and offer encouragement? In our primal days it took a cave of experienced women to ensure the survival of each (and each other’s) child!
Outside of your closest folks, research your local breastfeeding and parent groups. Attending a group during the postpartum period is incredibly helpful for keeping perspective and maintaining good emotional and mental wellness.
A wonderful place to start is La Leche League, a longstanding and rich support network offered for free in almost every country worldwide and online!
Don’t forget to research ahead of time for a good lactation consultant. If you have an acute breastfeeding problem such as breast or nipple pain, concerns about your milk supply or baby’s weight, you will need a one-on-one clinical assessment from an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) the top credential in the field of breastfeeding and lactation.
Trust your instincts, if something doesn’t feel right or you think you need help, you probably do!
